How to Forgive When It’s Hard
A Biblical, Practical, Spirit-Empowered Guide to Forgiveness
In Simple Terms
Forgiveness is one of the hardest commands Jesus gave—but also one of the most healing. Forgiveness does not excuse sin or remove consequences; it frees your heart, heals your emotions, restores relationships, and aligns you with the heart of Christ. This guide explains how to forgive even when it is painful, slow, or overwhelming.
Why Forgiveness Is So Difficult
Forgiveness is hard because:
- The wound feels deep
- The pain feels personal
- The other person may not apologize
- The hurt may still affect you
- Injustice feels unresolved
Jesus understands this pain. He was betrayed, denied, abandoned, mocked, beaten, and crucified — yet He prayed:
“Father, forgive them…” (Luke 23:34)
Forgiveness is not natural. Forgiveness is supernatural.
What Forgiveness Is (and Isn’t)
FORGIVENESS IS:
- Releasing resentment
- Giving the hurt to God
- Choosing peace over bitterness
- Obeying Jesus
- Trusting God with justice
- Opening the door to healing
FORGIVENESS IS NOT:
- Excusing the wrong
- Forgetting the pain
- Trusting the person again immediately
- Ignoring boundaries
- Denying the hurt
- A feeling
Forgiveness is not reconciliation — reconciliation takes two people. Forgiveness takes only one: you.
The Biblical Foundation of Forgiveness
Jesus taught:
- Forgive “seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22)
- Forgive as God forgave you (Ephesians 4:32)
- Forgive so your prayers are not hindered (Mark 11:25)
- Forgive even enemies (Matthew 5:44)
Forgiveness isn’t optional in discipleship — it’s essential.
A Step-by-Step Process to Forgive
1. Acknowledge the Hurt Honestly
You cannot forgive what you refuse to feel. Pour out your heart to God (Psalm 62:8).
2. Choose to Forgive by Faith
Forgiveness starts with a decision, not a feeling. Say: “Lord, I choose to forgive ______\_. I release them to You.”
Feelings change after obedience.
3. Give the Burden to God
Let God handle justice and accountability (Romans 12:19). He sees everything.
4. Pray for Healing
Ask the Holy Spirit to heal your wounds. Healing often takes time — but God honors the process.
5. Set Healthy Boundaries if Needed
Forgiveness does not mean:
- Reopening toxic relationships
- Allowing abuse
- Dropping all boundaries
Forgiveness + wisdom = freedom.
6. Repeat as Often as Needed
Old wounds may resurface. Forgiveness is sometimes repeated — not because it didn’t work before, but because the pain comes in waves.
How Forgiveness Connects to the 12 Steps
Forgiveness is built into:
- Step 4: Honest moral inventory
- Step 8: List those we harmed
- Step 9: Make amends
- Step 10: Ongoing inventory
These steps create healing, peace, and restored relationships.
Why Forgiveness Brings Freedom
Forgiveness:
- Breaks bitterness
- Restores joy
- Reduces anxiety
- Heals trauma
- Strengthens prayer life
- Restores relationships
- Aligns you with Jesus
Forgiveness blesses you more than the offender.
